IGNITING COMMUNITY ACTION THIS SUMMER!

This July LEAVE NO TRACE BRIGHTON will be working with the University of Brighton on a funded, collaborative community and university campaign, focussed on shared care of Brighton’s coastal and ocean environment.

LEAVE NO TRACE BRIGHTON and volunteers from the University of Brighton will be based at the LEAVE NO TRACE BRIGHTON Event Hub (located in the event space next to the Upside Down House) on Brighton seafront, over weekends of July 15/16 and 22/23. Our team of volunteers, the ‘Blue Crew’, will actively engage beach visitors to raise awareness of the waste and pollution issues that blight Brighton’s beautiful beaches and coastal waters every summer, and how each and every one of us can take action to help protect and preserve the health of Brighton’s coastal and ocean environment.

The campaign Blue Crew will be easily recognisable as they will be chatting to beach visitors dressed as giant seagulls and other marine creatures(!), interacting in a light hearted humorous way. Our Blue Crew will be encouraging beach visitors to sign the digital ‘Brighton Pledge’, to:

  1. Dispose their rubbish responsibly
  2. #TAKE3FORTHESEA
  3. Use a reusable cup.

…each and every time they visit Brighton seafront.

For those inspired to take immediate action, beach cleaning kit will be available to borrow from the LEAVE NO TRACE BRIGHTON Event Hub throughout the day. All rubbish collected from these mini beach cleans will be sorted into recycling categories. This will form a visual display for the public to see exactly what type of waste is found irresponsibly discarded on our beaches, which is sure to inspire a change in purchase and consumption, particularly of single-use packaged items!

Dr Catherine Kelly, Director of the Wild Beach School, best selling author of ‘Blue Spaces, How and Why Water Can Make You Feel Better’ and blue space practitioner, will be kicking off the first campaign weekend with a very special ‘Teach On The Beach’, an educational reconnection to the marine environment, suitable for adults and children. This is a free event with limited spaces (please make sure you book in advance!).

And if anyone is left in doubt as to WHY we need to keep our local ocean environment clean and free of waste and pollution, the LEAVE NO TRACE Event Hub will be the venue of a number of educational, informative and inspiring talks from Brighton based coastal, ocean and sea life conservation charities and businesses, including The Sussex Dolphin Project, Rampion Visitor Centre and Sussex Underwater.

YES BRIGHTON!

WE LOOK FORWARD TO IGNITING SOME SERIOUS (AND FUN!) COMMUNITY ACTION THIS SUMMER!

SEE YOU ON THE BEACH!
