Leave No Trace Brighton crew and Sea Lanes management will be on the beach behind Sea Lanes with all the equipment you will need to get involved – no need to book or reserve a space, we’ll have plenty of equipment for everyone.

We are a group of local beach lovers that are campaigning to raise awareness and action to protect our beaches and green spaces. Our aims to educate, encourage and empower individuals communities and businesses to reduce, recycle or properly dispose rubbish so our beaches, green spaces and seas can be clean and tidy for everyone to enjoy.

A couple of points to highlight to all the amazing humans coming along to our first Community Beach Clean of 2025 this Sunday, kindly supported and sponsored by amazing B Corp seafront cafe, @lucky_beach. As a thank-you for taking action, Lucky Beach are offering a complimentary cup of filter coffee or tea to all beach cleaners! THANK YOU TEAM LUCKY BEACH!

Point 1. In an effort to minimise our event’s environmental impact - don’t forget your reusable cup! No cuppy, no coffee! 😂🫡

Point 2. We have a group of postgraduate @sussexuni students attending the beach clean to conduct an ethnographical study of beach cleaning in Brighton. ‘The purpose of the study is to gain an understanding of the sensory and embodied experiences of voluntary beach cleaning, and how this shapes the volunteers understanding of marine waste and connectedness to nature and others’.
If willing, you may be asked to participate in this study (all notes/photos will be anonymised) by means of observation and/or interview. If you don’t wish to take part, no problem at all, the students in question will ask for permission before any study takes place. We look forward to seeing the outcome of the research!!

Over seven billion tonnes of plastic has been created in the last century. The sheer scale of the problem is hard to visualise – let alone solve. It is simply overwhelming. How can we approach such a vast problem – how do we save wildlife from that much plastic?⁠

Well – like a medic overwhelmed with casualties, we triage. This means we must target the most deadly plastic first – if we can’t remove it all we must focus on the most lethal items and prioritise their removal from the environment. ⁠

This is utterly heartbreaking. Luckily, the wonderful humans at @bdmlr_uk (Norfolk medics) managed to rescue this young pup. 🦭

If you find any washed-up fishing waste on Brighton seafront please (safely🧤) collect and clear it - let’s help keep as much of this destructive plastic pollution as we can, OUT of the coastal and marine environment.

If you find any large items of fishing waste, please try and pull the item up the beach, past the high tide line, drop us a DM and we’ll recover it as soon as possible.

Is this the state of our seas? 🥹

We’ve had so many entanglements recently (a humpback whale, an adult seal in Cornwall and another seal pup yesterday) that we’re struggling to be positive about the future.

Yesterday, this poor seal pup was called into us, severely entangled in ghost netting (monofilament and rope). Well meaning members of the public had tried to remove the netting, and even pinned it to the beach with a metal stake; presumably to keep the seal from entering the water. However, this made the netting cut deeper as the pup tried to move away.

Thankfully our Medics attended, removed the netting and the pup is now in the care of RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre where she has the best chance of a full recovery 🙏

However, this was a massive undertaking for our Medics from Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk (thank you 💙) and the seal was found in considerable distress, with an infected wound.

Ghost netting has horrible consequences, just like for this pup. However, many go unfound and fatalities are common. We just hope we can be there for them before that happens.

This is why we exist 🦭 🐋 🐬
